Shelby’s Story

How long have you been doing CrossFit program? What type of exercise or sport (if any) had you been doing previously?

I’ve been doing Crossfit for a year and 2 months.  Prior to that I stayed plenty active weight lifting, cycling, and being outside.

What attracted you to the CrossFit program? What goals were you hoping to achieve?

I started doing Spartan training (HIIT) when I lived in Indiana.  I always knew when I could join an actual Crossfit affiliate I was going to give it a try.  Once I got in, I was hooked and still am.    My goals consisted of going consistently and trying to improve my mobility (still working on that, haha.)

What were your feelings going into your first day of CrossFit and beginning this journey?

My first day I was really excited and felt like I was going to keep up just fine.  Boy was I wrong.  At the end of my first day I think I went straight home and went to bed.  I already had my nutrition down, and was in the best shape of my life, or so I thought.  I remember the constant pain I endured for the next couple weeks.  Members kept telling me to come back and I did.

What do you like about CrossFit? What would you tell someone who was considering joining?

What isn’t there to like about CrossFit?  It’s my personal happy place.  It’s a place where you can go to challenge yourself in every way.  Mentally, emotionally, and physically.  It is the best medicine after a good or bad day.  And let’s not forget about the culture.  The people you meet and the encouragement shared along the way is what it’s really about.  You truly are family when you step into a box, especially Ft. Meigs.  I would tell someone that is considering crossfit to try it out for a week.  Stick to it, stay hydrated, and eat A LOT of food.  Also, I would let them know it won’t be easy at times, but the people along the way will make it worth your while, and the high you get when you finish a grueling Hero workout or accomplish a goal, there is nothing that can replace that.  Oh and stretch… A LOT!

Favorite CrossFit movement?

Favorite movement?  Is there such a thing?  How about least favorite movement – WALLBALLS and burpees.

What impact has CrossFit had on your daily life? Have you noticed changes? Have your loved ones noticed changes? What are they saying?

CrossFit has changed my life in a magnitude of ways.  First, I have a better outlook in life.  CrossFit has a way of challenging you in ways that I don’t think people realize until they give it a go.  I’ve also noticed I am more social (as if that was possible?).  The community is home.  It goes much deeper then fitness at Ft. Meigs.  For just turning the Dirty Thirty, I don’t feel even close to that.  I feel young still and now I can say I truly am in the best shape of my life and look to expand on that.  In a little over a year, I have put on 30 lbs and my strength has sky rocketed.  As many know, I don’t get back home to Illinois very often, and when I do, it’s a rewarding feeling to hear your family and friends compliment you.  We see ourselves every day, and even though we are changing (physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually), we may not notice those changes.  When friends and family chime in, that’s when you realize just how special CrossFit is.

Proudest CrossFit moment?

I don’t have a single “proudest” moment.  I continue to set goals with myself, and reach out to crush them!  I think the thing I am most proud about is my continued growth and the relationships I have built along the way.
